Moderate Over-Kill

by admin on Mar.24, 2010, under Computer, Misc

I have posted several times on here about building my own desktop. And I have been very pleased with the outcome as well as it’s performance. However, I have this way of not being able to leave anything alone.

Just the other day I ran across a CPU cooler from ThermalTake on clearance. I really didn’t have any complaints with the cooler that came with my processor but I couldn’t pass up 75% off and the cool factor of a fancier cooler. What I didn’t realize until it arrived in the mail just how much bigger this was going to be than what I already had.

This wasn’t my first time installing a heat sink or working with thermal grease but I still wanted to be careful and make sure I didn’t screw anything up. I got all the supplies I needed to clean the old grease from the processor as well as clean the new heat sink before it goes in.

There really isn’t much exciting to say about the instillation until I got to putting the side of the case back on. When I first looked at this thing in person I was concerned if the side would fit with the fan mounted where it was. After a test fit I think I would have been able to make it work but only with maybe an 1/8th inch to spare. I decided it would be better to rotate the window 180° moving the fan next to the hard drive rack and giving about an inch of room for the new cooler.
